“We'd never visited Hungary before and found it delightful. I've never eaten so much ice cream in my life - I think there are 8 ice cream shops in Vacs alone! Every morning my youngest son and I would walk a few minutes to the local market and buy the freshest raspberries, nectarines, sweetcorn and tomatoes (and all so cheap!), pick up some amazing cakes from the bakery, and then return to an all fresco breakfast in the courtyard. The house is beautiful. So much space, high ceilings and lovely architectural features. It's in the heart of Vacs which is a perfectly sized city. It's a short (15 minute?) walk to the train station where the fastest trains into Budapest center take just 25 minutes. Vacs itself has some good museums, all the local shops you'd need (we didn't get in the car at all for several days), and is very picturesque. Vacs annual music festival was on during the time we exchanged (end of July) and it was great. Numerous live classical and pop concerts over three days, culminating with a fireworks display almost immediately outside the house. One of our favorite activities was to take the kayak on the five minute ferry across the Danube to the island which connects to the western side of Hungary. We found a completely secluded beach on the far side of the island where we spent the day swimming, kayaking and reading in the shade. It was so peaceful and beautiful. Miklos and the family were excellent hosts, going to so much trouble to ensure we were happy and comfortable in their home. I would have no reservations at all in recommending an exchange with them!”
