This a carefully restored 17th century house is perched in the high Andes.
It has a barroque chapel, still in use for family weddings and christenings, as well as retreats.
All rooms all face a stone paved courtyard. The 4 hectare grounds include woods, a large stream, which becomes a river during the rainy season and a huge garden with football pitch, barbecue and croquet lawns.
The rooms are large and comfortable, each with an en suite bathroom. Two drawing rooms have huge open fires, there's a playroom with a small snooker table (not at all grand), a library, a period drawing room with original Spanish colonial furniture. The vaulted cellar has been converted into a home theatre and bar.
The kitchen is large and comfortable. House staff are available, for cooking laundry and driving.
4 wheel drive car would be available.
Use of 2nd home in Coroico Yungas tropics (pool,3 brms en suite, guest house).
Felipe and I (Marcela) have been married for 19 years. We are both Bolivian but went to university in England. We have four children aged 18, 17, 14 and 10, two boys and two girls. We have travelled around North and South America and Europe and are keen to try out new places.
Felipe is in charge of Corporate Responsibility at a mining company and I am the senior editor of a political analysis weekly newspaper.
We are keen to try out a home exchange, most of the family members enjoy hiking, rafting, and others prefer reading or going to museums.
Just 10 minutes away from downtown La Paz, Chicani is a farming village where cattle still graze.
It is still very rural with a friendly aymara community.
20 minutes up the road and you will be in a breathtaking trail that winds up to the summit at 4300 meters above sea level. The llamas and alpacas will be at your side while you explore streams and small lakes. Perfect for trout fishing, hiking and horse riding.
Downtown, you can see western La Paz and sample the nightlife. Tennis, swimming and golf are available on request at the local club.
La Paz is a unique city with a buzzling mixture of people. Might be one of the only remaining capitals where locals wear their traditional clothes, they do not dress up for tourists. Visit the exquisite colonial churches and museums. 2 hours away are Lake Titicaca and the Tiwanacu ruins.
The Uyuni salt lake can be reached by plane 1 hour or train 12 hours.
