Where is it?
The village of Kaumberg ( www.kaumberg.at ) has a population of 1000 and although small, it offers a shop with post office facilities, café, 3 restaurants, playground with skateboard facilities, tennis court, small ski lift, church, doctor and vet surgery. It is situated at 500m and the castle ruins of the Araburg at 800m offer superb views of the surrounding countryside and distant mountains. In summer there are countless possibilities for walking, biking (including a local free bicycle-hire scheme), golfing (the nearest 18 hole golf course is 15 minutes by car http://www.adamstal.at and has been rated under the top ten golf courses in Europe), swimming and outdoor climbing. The area is known for its local “heuriger” which sell their own beverages from the local apple and pear trees as well as food produce. About half of the local farms are organic and we enjoy collecting milk on a regular basis from our local farmer. Winters can provide ample opportunities for skiing, snow-shoe walking and ice skating, but if conditions are not good enough the nearest ski area is a 50 minute drive.
With Vienna just a 40 minute drive by car, the sights of the capital city are easily accessible with park-and-ride facilities available next to the nearest underground station in the south of the city. This year´s 150th birthday anniversary of Gustav Klimt makes a visit to Vienna particularly worthwhile with ongoing exhibitions throughout 2012.
Additionally, there are numerous other places of interest within an hour of our home:
For music-lovers – Eisenstadt (Haydn), Baden (Beethoven) and of course Vienna
For outdoor-lovers – local foothills with all the above options; the outlying Alps (Schneeberg, Rax); Neusiedlersee for wind-surfing….; River Danube
For relaxation-lovers – a selection of hot springs on the doorstep (Baden, Wiener Neustadt, Lutzmannsburg
The surrounding with its hills is a heaven for climbers (one of the biggest climbing garden with 750+ routes in Austria right in the Viennese woods, just 10 min away from our home)as well as for motor bike fans, with lots of windy rounds to discover.
